Other Projects

All of the games listed here are short projects made in an early version of GB Studio.

The Forest Calls

The Forest Calls began as a 72 hour, solo, game jam entry. After that trial by fire, I decided to continue to improve this spooky, adventure game whenever I had some free time. Surprisingly, I didn’t make too many changes to the story besides sprinkling in a bit more explanation. My focus ended up being in how far I could push the maps by adding variations due to items and backtracking. The end result wasn’t that complex, but I learned a lot here through my own experimentation and from valuable player feedback.

For example: one of the early challenges I faced was the level design. My limited skills + the lost tone I wanted to evoke, made for an interesting conundrum. How much handholding did I want to give the player? My solution ended up being these white flowers. The opening maps used them simply as a background aesthetic, but as the story began the sole flower transitioned into a marking tool (as pictured below).  It’s a subtle change, but it worked well. Even in the original build it received the most notable praise. Some players picked up the change right away, and others discovered it proudly through trial and error.

Monthly Dragon Oracle

The Monthly Dragon Oracle games were made for three reasons: I had a stretch of weeks in between paid work, I wanted to test the limits of the fishing system I built for The Forest Calls, and I wanted to make something that would make my friends laugh. Everything quickly came together to create a short daily fortune game that succeeded in brightening some busy days.

Things started in The Forest Calls with a dream of having a surprise fishing minigame. Even with the limitations, I was able to find a way to build an extremely simple system: at the set prompt the game runs a random variable and shifts into a game of chance. I continued to build on this idea and pushed GB Studio further with my Monthly Dragon Oracle games.

All of my GB Studio games begin as thumbnails on paper, and only later I attempt to recreate the idea within a program. As pictured above, the variable starts in scene two. The program randomly picks a branch between 1-6, and from there, it also runs a second variable. That number ultimately decides the player’s fortune. Each branch contains five results, therefore granting the player an opportunity to receive one of thirty unique fortunes.

Once everything was in place, things went extremely well. The game can be enjoyed without taking up more than a minute or two of a person’s time.
